The largest city in Canada’s Saskatchewan province, Saskatoon is sometimes called the “Paris of the Prairies” due to its stately bridges and beautiful art nouveau architecture.
One of the most child-friendly cities in North America, Saskatoon is full of attractions for families. Be sure to head to Kinsmen Park, where you can ride the miniature railway and try the many rides, or let your children splash around in the pools at the Play Village.
The city seems like it was built to be walked around, and walking tours head out regularly to give visitors the low down about the buildings and people of the city. Check out the website of the Saskatoon Heritage Society for suggested routes or just wander around yourself. Another great historical attraction is the Wanuskewin Heritage Park, where you can learn all about the region’s native cultures.
Take leisurely river cruises and enjoy a glass of wine as the city glides by or visit the Western Development Museum and find out how this charming town came to be. If you need a bit more excitement, then a great evening option is catching a game of the Saskatoon Blades, one of Canada’s finest ice hockey teams.
The city also hosts some fine festivals throughout the year covering everything from jazz to folk music, art, Shakespeare and alternative theatre, so check out what’s on when you visit. But whenever you go, the town’s many restaurants will provide a hearty meal, with dishes from across the world on offer.
Outside town, the countryside provides many outdoor activities. Walk the Meewasin Trail along the Saskatchewan River, try outdoor ice skating between December and March or hire clubs and enjoy a day of golf at one of the many excellent local courses.
Friendly, full of culture, delicious food, sporting activities and architectural sights, Saskatoon is a real delight.
The Saskatoon bus service is reliable and extensive, offering both regular and express services – so ask for the right fare for you. The easiest way to get around by bus is to head to the Downtown Terminal, which provides access to all of the outlying parts of town. Cycling is also popular, not least because of the beautiful Meewasin Trail, and the centre is ideal for walking.
